This conversation about race seems awkwardly plunked in here to make a point. It's a little ridiculous, but not... like... harmful and offensive (to me, anyway).

Sometimes this book reminds me of those WB shows from when I was a teenager (e.g. Dawson's Creek), where a pack of adults in a writer's room sit around a table & decide what a bunch of teenagers would think or feel in a certain situation. As a viewer, I enjoyed the show, but could rarely relate. Lane is trying so hard for a casual, "realistic" vibe to the characters' thoughts & words, but it's missing the mark.

Wanted to read this one, but also wanted to give it some time to let the hype - both positive and negative - surrounding the book die down before I did so.
