He deserved the words as well. At the end she agreed to marry him eventhough she said she wouldn’t marry again. So Julian got his hea which at the end a man willing to literally got to prison so the woman he loves doesn’t have to was the best outcome for me

As for the love story I enjoyed this Julian was a ride or die and loved his poems and love letters never sent being read during his trial and the state off between him and FMC when she realizes how deep his devotion goes. I think I would’ve enjoyed the FMC reciprocated his love a little earlier openly. Her actions were there but after all he did for her through the years

Ultimately I enjoyed this. The bad guy was killed in the end by the sister of the girl who he abused. Senora Perez She was a mistress of a busting Venezuelan diplomat I found her story intriguing and would love to read her story and have her gain a hea other than have to play consort to rich men.

Most hrs like to ignore slavery was even a thing during this time at best or use it to gain sympathy for MCs who oppose it at worst. When in reality it’s about the people who lived it and their experiences. So to see that to have the characters and their demeanors, interactions and how they had to literally contort themselves to survive that life was refreshing

She was torn between an affair to embarrass him and force a divorce or running off to America. Also mmc was clearly in love with her and she kept calling him her friend and I was as annoyed as him. Eventually an affair ensued and though I enjoyed the writing the spicy scenes used such flowery language it was hard to tell what was happening

The lawyer mmc has secretly been in love with FMC for years and lived in quiet resentment of her husband while she was in France etc. living her life as a married estranged countess. Her husband decides he wants an heir and comes for her. FMC goes to mmc for safety. The back and forth on how to get away from hubby was a little aggravating

FMC was on the run from her husband who liked to beat women for pleasure. FMC had entrusted her family lawyer with this secret and he helped her work out a deal to have her freedom if she kept her husband’s secret. She also helped a slave/servant get free of her husband abuse but she was later killed by one of his men.

This was exactly as it says romantic. The writing was very poetic and kept me locked in. This was not like my normal reads there was a lot of storyline in addition to the romance but the story was so intriguing it kept my attention. There was an abused FMC, a pining and devoted mmc, also way slavery and abuse of slaves was addressed was rare in these historical novels
