I liked FMC honest innocence and her aversion to names. It was cute. And the fact that mmc did thoughtful things for her the dog and his blind confidence in her. Some things I didn’t like the helper/bro in law searching for his sister. I enjoyed her finding her family and the wisdom her ah ma passed on like the bridge reference. I also loved hearing about black life during this time

It was refreshing to hear an international perspective while also referencing the prejudice and difficulties in the US and the world but it didn’t weigh too heavily. Ultimately this was a decent read but I wanted more romance. MCs agreed to no kids and would spend a lot of time apart cause of his work which is fine but it felt more like a I’ll see you when I see you and I need more

Mmc is mixed white British mom whos fam disowned her. His Family lives in a black settlement in US and has 4 brothers. 3 brothers died in the war with him and he came back alone. Was supposed to work on the telegraph with them but now he is building it in their memory. Both MCs are grappling with grief and loss and connection that way.

FMC was an Asian adoptee of a missionary family secretly pining for the mother she lost. Later we find out that Christian mother actually abducted her. Big yikes. Mom keeps marrying her off to white missionaries and her secretly gay also adopted brother isnt having it. Bro tells black mmc working on Chinese telegraph letters to employee her

So this was different than my normal read. This felt more like a historical fiction than a romance to me. MCs were on their own journeys and their love story took a back seat which wasn’t necessarily bad just wish we got more from them maybe some yearning and pining considering mmc was traveling all across the world.
