I’m not far in the book at all, however, I would venture to say that this translation by Gregory Elliot represents one of the principal challenges of this text, which I find extremely unfortunate.
At times, he sacrifices coherent English syntax in favor of unidiomatic French constructions (I assume). Obviously these have their place in translation, but not here.
