Dear Georgette Heyer,
If you expect us to believe Barbara is femme fatale, then why did you make her behave like an immature 12-year-old.
...
- I kept telling you I am bad.
- Indeed, you kept behaving like you are bad, so now I'm taking you at you word. You ARE bad.
- How dare you treat me like I'm bad!?
Make up your bloody mind, Bab, you can't have it both ways.

Haha, I remember enjoying this but I'm not sure the more serious tone is really Heyer's thing. It really is time I reread her.

And she's no good at the instalove stuff. Ugh.
I found her intending the female mc to be the "rake" this time really interesting, but think the execution very poor and unconvincing. Most of the time she behaves like a highly-strung 12-year-old, not exactly my idea of femme-fatalism. ☺️
I agree, it's admirable that she tried something different here but it's not one of her best books. It's the cheeky heroines running circles around rakes and other dominant men that I love.

I really like her "sober" books best, but it's great that all of us with different tastes & preferenes find our own favourites. 😊
I did like The Nonesuch and Civil Contract - probably 'sober' books? Annoyingly, I read them before Goodreads so don't have reviews to remind me of them.
Civil Contract must be one her most sober for sure. The Quiet Gentleman & The Nonesuch less so, but I still think they belong in that category. :)
