Up until now I felt that this is the best book in the series, but I find, upon another re-read, that if the story does not follow the Malazans, I do not care a bit. Crokus, Mappo, Icarium, Karsa... I have zero investment in any of their stories.

Don't know if I enjoy anything in these books quite as much as sappers blowing stuff up and close-quarters fighting in the streets of whatever city is being taken / sieged. The battle of Y'Ghatan is probably the best example of the entire series.

As always, this is the bit where I pitch a fit and froth at the mouth and remember that there are no characters in the Malazan universe I hate more than Korbolo Dom and Mallick Rel. Only my love of books keeps me from flinging the thing at a wall. Also, this is the precise point where I begin to actively cheer for the drawn out process of the Malazan Empire going to fuck. Woohoo!

Holy moly... Y'Ghatan... one of those moments in the Malazan epic that is utterly unforgettable in its mindblowing, haunting and terrifying madness. Every one of these books has such sequences that punch the breath out, leave the hair standing on end and, more often than not, fill the eyes with tears as well.
