Came to think:

A tipping point in deterrence occurs when the perceived cost-benefit balance of aggression shifts — not because of material changes, but because of credibility erosion. Deterrence relies on capability + commitment credibility.

Before the tipping point: Aggressors believe retaliation is certain → they abstain.
After the tipping point: Doubt creeps in → they test boundaries → deterrence fails.

Green hydrogen sounds like the most complicated thing to create a tipping point for. Electric cars and green power production are pretty straightforward compared to that. Innovation is needed.

But, there must be a big business potential in the long run. But who would ever invest in border countries like Finland, which carries a significant country risk due to its proximity to Russia?

Abolishing the slave trade and enforcing the abolition was a success because not all participants in the slave trade had to participate in the enforcement. Britain was strong enough to enforce.

The Montreal agreement was a success also because the early signers benefited, and after that, others had an incentive to join.

Decarbonization WAS thought to be very different. Is it?

A 2.7-degree increase in temperature is seen by economists like Nordhaus as not that bad.

Lenton shows that such an increase from the current 1.5 degrees (compared to preindustrial figures) to 2.7 degrees increases the number of people in very high heat from 400 million to 2000 million. Are they all going to migrate to the north?

Enjoyable. The concept and theory of tipping points are explained in an accessible way in the first part of the book, i.e., without mathematics. Examples are discussed.

The tipping elements - i.e., elements of a complex system such as the climate system - which can be tipped are also defined. Examples of tipping elements include the values and norms of human communities.
