There are so many elements in this that have an echo of Emma! Nothing is one to one but it’s still fun to pick up on. I just read an echo of the Mr Elton/Emma misunderstanding.

I mean: “…after a good deal of desultory talk and description of the minnows and water-spiders, in whom Mr Clare seemed to take a deep interest, they went on with their book till the horses came…” (445).
A clergyman who takes interest in such tiny things seems to be on the right track!
