I'm returning this to the library today, so let's have a final read where I can simply bask in the story and artwork without thinking how it might affect my now-finished review. Mike Curato, you are a gem.

One more read, today, before I finalize my review. I love Mike Curato's work; I would say it's a shame I didn't truly discover him until 2025, but maybe I value him more now than I would have in 2015.

Another read, then I'll refine and rewrite my review. I've yet to encounter the Mike Curato book that doesn't merit a closer, deeper look.

One more read of this today, then I put metaphorical pen to paper for the first draft of my review. I'd call it an unenviable task, trying to do the story justice, but how would I rather spend my evening than challenging myself to articulate the nuanced meaning of a lovely picture book such as this?

A second read. I want to see if aspects of the story grab me that happened to drift by unnoticed on my first read. Mike Curato's drawings are simple and elegant, but it's easy to miss subtext on the first go-through.

Mike Curato has his work cut out for this book to live up to the excellence of the first two about Elliot and Mouse. I'm rooting for him to succeed...
