Really love getting back into Veil Haven! I have a theory about one of the scenes from the first book and Ash’s connection to the void. Don’t read more if you don’t want book 1 spoilers!

I feel like Ash is some sort of child of the void or maybe even IS the void (?), and when the void couldn’t talk to her because of the Forest Eye, Ava talked to Josie knowing Ash would be watching to get a message to her.

Marceline Ash is definitely connected to the void, as she is one of the few people who can communicate with them. This could be tied to Ash having the same powers as the town founder, who may be an ancestor of Ash. Or the Void could just be a physical manifestation of Ash’s own powers, which could be why at times she feels as if there’s nothing up there and she feels that deep sense of loneliness. It could just be her. The void does seem to react similar to the moods Ash is in throughout the story, like when the sky was black after the death of a beloved character (my fav character too 😭🙏🏼). When she encounters both Mr. Boogle and the Cryptid of Vapor and Flesh, both come close to revealing some sort of truth to Ash about who she is, the latter even beginning to say, “You are one of-“ before being cut off by, per usual, that shifty ass Forest Eye. If Ash is some sort of Void-Walker or deeply connected to the Void, it would make sense that the Forest Eye wouldn’t want her to know that.

Marceline Anyway, I haven’t formed a solid theory around it. Those are all just things I found extremely interesting. Side note for this novella: as a non-binary person the celebration of people’s identities and attention to their coming out experience made me cry. So sweet to see in a book.
