" To what end had the Divine created the stars in heaven to fill a man with feelings of inspiration one day, and insignificance the next ? "

There's quite a stoicism in this reflection, which also touches on theodicy - ( ugh.... involuntary connection.. ) - the question of divine intention. If the Divine created such beauty, why burden in it the seeds of existential turmoil ?

I'm beginning to grasp the towlesian secret. In real life, we don't always understand things as they happen. We look back later, and realize why something mattered, we see how small choices led to big changes.
Towles captures that feeling perfectly.

Ah, Sofia - about playing Rachmaninov, at Palais Garnier ....Is she ready ? The Count would say - readiness is not a matter of certainty. It is a matter of courage.. But what if she falters ? Then, the Count would say " then falter with grace. " A gentleman will always have the right answer..

Chapter 22.

In which Sofia reminds Count Rostov that children don't need much to be happy. Just a song, a story. ... Somewhere along the way , he forgot that. Or he didn't forget, just got busy surviving. So sad...we all try to survive, waking up to alarms, not sunrises. We scroll before we breathe... Living is different. Children know this instinctively. They don't need a reason to be happy. Let's be kids

I still wonder how anyone could rate this book negatively. Then again , it's certainly easier to play with the " like " button, than to try to delve into something your level doesn't allow you to grasp.. In a world where scrolling has replaced thinking, maybe is no surprise that reflection isn't actually just out of fashion, but it's simply beyond the cognitive resource of the average scroll-conditioned mind.

" There is a difference between being resigned to a situation, and reconciled to it. "

Indeed. Resignation is the truth you hate. Reconciliation is the lie you frame. Resignation is the moment you see the world clearly. Reconciliation is the moment you decide clarity is too expensive.

In a world imagined by Amor Towles, serial-likers would likely be sent to the Metropol not for dissent, but for excessive digital enthusiasm - condemned to press the like button on blank pages, under the watchful eye of a Bolshevik refined in his own way, with literary taste and a deep aversion to emojis. And all of it, of course, set to the wistful soundtrack of As Like Goes Bye.

Celeste Corrêa Bonjour, Théo!

You seem to be loving it — makes me want to reread A Gentleman in Moscow, but my copy’s not with me.
Bonne lecture !

Théo d'Or Yes, so far it is quite challenging. There's a kind of gentlemanly charm in his writing, I enjoy the rhythm of language as much as the story itself, and least but not last - his philosophy. And there's always a poetic turn of phrase to lift the weight. I would compare him with Julian Barnes, he has the same sensitivity.

I’m really happy, Théo. I bought this book at the famous Lello bookstore in Porto. I went there with a Brazilian friend, and that day they were performing The Little Prince, which her youngest son loved. There are always big queues of tourists and music in the street. I last went this summer and heard jazz and Elvis Presley. It was warm and such a lovely afternoon.

Théo d'Or I am so happy you are happy, Celeste. It is truly magical when a simple ordinary moment in life sets off a whole chain of memories...For me, a second-hand book awake the full splendor of childhood recollections. You know, that specific smell...I open that book, and suddenly, I am not really there anymore..I am back in a different time, with each book.. Vian reminds me of jazz, first of all. But each book remind me a forgotten thing , or which I thought I forgot..It's not nostalgia exactly. Rather a longing that feels like home. Kind of saudade, and you know that feeling.

Théo d'Or I remember when I was only a little boy, and reading Duras' Moderato Cantabile . I read it because I didn't have other books at that time. I expected to get bored, I felt is for adult ones. But, it wasn't like that. Now, I wonder what would have happened if I hadn't read that book, at that age. Maybe nothing. Or maybe everything. I still have that copy, with yellowed pages..When I open it, I feel something settle in me, like I'm meeting an old version of myself.. In the end, that is reading - not just learning, but remembering. That version of myself, who was trying to grow up too fast, and now, is exactly the opposite...

Celeste Corrêa A few years ago, I reread twenty-seven books by a French author I loved as a kid. They smelled of damp and memories. :)

Mythique.

Théo d'Or Merveilleux..

message 11: by Théo d'Or (new) - added it

message 12: by Théo d'Or (new) - added it

message 14: by Théo d'Or (new) - added it

message 15: by Maria (new)

message 16: by Théo d'Or (new) - added it

Théo d'Or Hahahaha! 🙂

message 17: by Théo d'Or (new) - added it

Théo d'Or Mais dites-moi, si un avion

message 18: by Maria (new)

message 19: by Théo d'Or (new) - added it

Théo d'Or 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

message 20: by Théo d'Or (new) - added it

message 22: by Théo d'Or (new) - added it

Théo d'Or Très bien.

Maria C Mon vaisseau spatial vient d’atterrir à Roissy.

message 24: by Théo d'Or (new) - added it

Théo d'Or Noté.

message 25: by Maria (new)

message 26: by Théo d'Or (new) - added it

message 27: by Maria (new)

message 28: by Théo d'Or (new) - added it

Théo d'Or Très bien .

message 29: by Maria (new)

Maria C un long dialogue rédigé au pluriel majestatique.

message 30: by Théo d'Or (new) - added it

Théo d'Or Affaire conclue.
