I still wonder how anyone could rate this book negatively. Then again , it's certainly easier to play with the " like " button, than to try to delve into something your level doesn't allow you to grasp.. In a world where scrolling has replaced thinking, maybe is no surprise that reflection isn't actually just out of fashion, but it's simply beyond the cognitive resource of the average scroll-conditioned mind.

I'm beginning to grasp the towlesian secret. In real life, we don't always understand things as they happen. We look back later, and realize why something mattered, we see how small choices led to big changes.
Towles captures that feeling perfectly.

Ah, Sofia - about playing Rachmaninov, at Palais Garnier ....Is she ready ? The Count would say - readiness is not a matter of certainty. It is a matter of courage.. But what if she falters ? Then, the Count would say " then falter with grace. " A gentleman will always have the right answer..

Chapter 22.

In which Sofia reminds Count Rostov that children don't need much to be happy. Just a song, a story. ... Somewhere along the way , he forgot that. Or he didn't forget, just got busy surviving. So sad...we all try to survive, waking up to alarms, not sunrises. We scroll before we breathe... Living is different. Children know this instinctively. They don't need a reason to be happy. Let's be kids

" By their very nature, human beings are so capricious, so complex, so delightfully contradictory, that they deserve not only our consideration, but our reconsideration ".

So true. Just experienced that.

" There is a difference between being resigned to a situation, and reconciled to it. "

Indeed. Resignation is the truth you hate. Reconciliation is the lie you frame. Resignation is the moment you see the world clearly. Reconciliation is the moment you decide clarity is too expensive.

In a world imagined by Amor Towles, serial-likers would likely be sent to the Metropol not for dissent, but for excessive digital enthusiasm - condemned to press the like button on blank pages, under the watchful eye of a Bolshevik refined in his own way, with literary taste and a deep aversion to emojis. And all of it, of course, set to the wistful soundtrack of As Like Goes Bye.

Can a man honor a vanished world without becoming a stranger to the one that remains ?

" To what end had the Divine created the stars in heaven to fill a man with feelings of inspiration one day, and insignificance the next ? "

There's quite a stoicism in this reflection, which also touches on theodicy - ( ugh.... involuntary connection.. ) - the question of divine intention. If the Divine created such beauty, why burden in it the seeds of existential turmoil ?

Théo d'Or ....but maybe I am the one out of touch, still believing that reading and understanding are related. Maybe I'm just not optimized. Or maybe - and this is the heresy - I still believe that difficulty is not elitism, and that the act of reading is a far more complex process than it appears.

Celeste Corrêa Bonjour, Théo !

Kurt Vonnegut argued that one must always keep the reader in mind, but that, in the act of writing, one should never picture a crowd — far too many people altogether. It is far better to imagine a single friend. In a more romantic vein, as the song has it: “I don’t want to set the world on fire; I just want to start a flame in your heart.”

Merci.

Théo d'Or Ah, Ink Spots, at the time when " L'Étranger " appeared...Yes, writing for a single friend is one of the most revealing acts a writer can perform. Like Kafka did....

Théo d'Or ... and Towles didn't write letters, here, but the read feel like they're adressed to a single reader, someone who appreciates elegance. His characters speak as if they're confiding in someone just off the page. That's the magic - the sense that the story is being told for You.
And one more important détail - Towles once said in an interview that his reader is " as smart and as well-read as he is ". That reflects perfectly what I wrote in my update...

Maria C I hope that someday Towles will write more Amor letters to his readers ... :))

Théo d'Or Oh...if Towles were to turn his pen toward his readers
I imagine the result would be no less elegant than his fiction. But I would say he writes to us already, just not with our names at the top of the page...In a letter for us, he would not rush to the point, there would be no point, in the modern sense. Maybe he would talk about a man he once saw reading a book on a park bench, in the rain...But not because it mattered, but because it stayed with him. And, what's more beautiful than something which stayed with you...even small things, apparently sans importance...

Théo d'Or Brilliant word-play - " Amor letters " :))

Maria C Amor (which means ‘love’ in Portuguese) writes with such elegance that it feels like a love letter to the readers. I’ve come to visit Celeste at the hotel… we’re up on the rooftop, reading and laughing together.

Merci Théo.

Théo d'Or On the rooftop ?? Hahaha !! It's only 3° here...
I couldn't afford that kind of luxury. Only if I'd take my car up there, hahaha !
And singing like the Beatles, on rooftop - Get Back:)) I could never forget that... c'était une vraie folie....

Maria C Around here, people say Portugal is very poor, but the sun and the blue sky are free. In the end, what does GDP — the so‑called ‘PIB’ — even matter?

Celeste Corrêa Maria, please....😅😅😅😅😅😅

message 12: by Théo d'Or (new) - added it

Théo d'Or The ones who said Portugal is poor, I bet they even don't see the blue sky , or the sun, or hear the
cries of the seagulls, nor the raindrops tapping on the window, with the rhythm of a poem.. They are poorer than that PIB that pretends to measure their worth..

message 13: by Maria (new)

Maria C :)) Well said, Théo. Merci.

Théo d'Or Let Maria talk, por favor !
Liberté, Égalité, Celesté !

Celeste Corrêa Maria tends to be very talkative, and sometimes she might come across as a little too enthusiastic.😅😅😅😅

message 16: by Théo d'Or (new) - added it

Théo d'Or Bah.. I believe she's exactly the kind of person who sees the sky turn red, and tell everybody.
And that's more than enough for me :))

message 17: by Maria (new)

Maria C Of all the compliments I’ve ever received, this is without doubt the most beautiful of them all. :))
Merci, Théo.
Tous les ciels rouges pour toi en 2026.

Celeste Corrêa Bien plus que tous les ciels rouges que 2026 pourra offrir, Théo !
Merci.

message 19: by Théo d'Or (new) - added it
