Such a brutal part of the story, not flinching at the violence and animalistic nature of the power-abused authorities at all. There is no kind of revenge in this story, just civilians who are being suppressed and tortured to the point where death might be a more generous option, which makes it very realistic in this sense.

Han Kang describes the demonstration in simple, un-dramatized language. But the force of the simplicity can make the reader tense up and feel absolutely heartbroken. The phrase “Because you wanted to live.” feels like being torn apart by all the agony that we have sensed from the start of the book. And we can see that this is just one part of her masterclass writing.
