Such a brutal part of the story, not flinching at the violence and animalistic nature of the power-abused authorities at all. There is no kind of revenge in this story, just civilians who are being suppressed and tortured to the point where death might be a more generous option, which makes it very realistic in this sense.

This part of the book is probably the best and gut-wrenching part of the book, yet. Han Kang always delivers some of the most effortlessly remarkable writing when she handles the perspectives of women’s characters. And I want to emphasize the word “effortlessly” because it is genuinely true; it hits all the notes with a straightforward and dispassionate language.

It’s look like this new chapter are going to focus more on the experiences of woman demonstrators, which is mentions lightly on one of previous chapter, but due to the character’s personality make it impossible to go that far, unlike the recent one, which looks like the characters has much more experiences about the incident, but because of some trauma that make her doesn’t want to talk about it.

It’s kinda surprised me that a lot of the books I have read, including this one, always have something relevant to my recent thoughts at the time. The passage where the character inquired of the reader is something that I have been constantly thinking about lately, too, about the nature of humankind, which is sometimes hard to make sense of: are we really a species with higher morals than others, or not?

Han Kang describes the demonstration in simple, un-dramatized language. But the force of the simplicity can make the reader tense up and feel absolutely heartbroken. The phrase “Because you wanted to live.” feels like being torn apart by all the agony that we have sensed from the start of the book. And we can see that this is just one part of her masterclass writing.
