What I find most interesting is that Laing thinks through loneliness via art rather than memoir. Instead of losing intimacy, this creates a different kind of closeness. A closeness to the artists and their solitude, to the city and its inhabitants, to Laing herself, and eventually to our own loneliness as readers.

Meandering, but beautiful and oh, so quietly intimate, thoughtful, and companionable. It feels less like a book and more like someone thinking aloud beside me.
