What I find most interesting is that Laing thinks through loneliness via art rather than memoir. Instead of losing intimacy, this creates a different kind of closeness. A closeness to the artists and their solitude, to the city and its inhabitants, to Laing herself, and eventually to our own loneliness as readers.

Interesting rather than emotive so far. Enjoying Laing’s sideways approach to loneliness, especially through Hopper and Warhol.
