I’m finding this to be a challenge to read. Every time I pick it up, a new question or thought I want to make note of occurs to me. I have a running list in my review space. (At least it’s not scraps of paper or the backs of envelopes, right?) Ha ha ha O_O

The main Navidson Record narrative is getting more interesting, finally, but I’m getting really annoyed by Johnny’s novel-length rambling drinking/drugs/sex/fighting/pretty girl stories bullshit notes. So boring to me, and I could not care less about any of that.

Well, that was enlightening and heartbreaking. The coded letter was intense, but what really broke me was the request for luggage, and the hope it represented that could never be realized. How sad. But enlightening regarding the reliability of the JT contributions.

Detouring off to read Johnny’s maternal correspondence, as suggested by the editor. Will be back to regular narrative page 74 shortly.

For someone who literally just days ago wrote a ranting review about excessive footnotes, you’d think that this book would be my kryptonite. But I am actually enjoying it quite a lot so far - the structure and purpose of the footnotes makes sense in this context.

In hindsight, it probably should have been obvious, or maybe was even explicitly stated and I missed it (there’s a lot going on!) but I feel like I’m starting to make some progress now.
lol I have no sympathy and all the sympathy at this stage. I got to around page 70 and threw it out the window. Well, I could have done but I’d borrowed it so instead I put it aside to politely return it to my friend whom loaned it to me.

I’ll be curious to see what happens when I get there.

I’m not jealous 🤣 I’d love to love this book 😭 one day…maybe I will
I’m pretty sure the book is designed to be frustrating. Whether that is a worthwhile goal in and of itself, I guess reasonable minds can differ. For me, it was one of those “I appreciate the idea more than the execution” things.

Lord knows that I haven’t liked enough “viral sensations” to make me question the whole publishing industry and the entire reading community - but that’s just the way it goes sometimes. 😅
I've always said this was a brilliant 200-page horror novel wrapped in three times that many pages of mostly crap.
