Beowulf telling the story of a father who lost his son in battle is among the most moving passages I've read in the classics thus far:
"No tunes from the harp, no cheer raised in the yard. / Along with his longing, he lies down on his bed / and sings a lament; everything seems too large, / the steadings and the fields."
