End of Vol 1!

I think I have an Emma complex. I’m seeing Austen’s Emma in Yonge’s “The Clever Woman of the Family” and now in this story. There are some interesting twists in both but the basic setup of an arrogant young woman with one parent whose understanding of those around her is flawed and limited is present in both stories.

Oh my goodness, chapter 8 was hilarious! The Rector was outgunned and outmanned. 😂😏

"Lucilla, for her part, had the calmest and most profound conviction that, when she discussed her own doings and plans and clevernesses, she was bringing forward the subject most interesting to her audience as well as to herself" (14).

"'We must leave that to Providence,' said Miss Marjoribanks, with a sense of paying a compliment to Providence in intrusting it with such a responsibility" (17).

The first chapter was funny! Lucilla is a good-natured, dramatic teenage steamroller.
