So far it's odd and I don't understand the choices of any of the characters really. I find it hard to believe the women are muscling through their periods rather than using makeshift tampons or attaching bands of fabric from the front to the back of the dress for pads to go onto. I also don't understand why they would resort to hair as thread instead of taking the thread out of the fabric?
