"Imam Hasan Al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said that when a thief is robbing a house and he hears the door moves and he goes and he hides, he went from committing theft to committing a minor act of shirk.
How is that?
Because before the door rattled, he was not afraid. When the door rattled, he feared that person instead of Allah (SWT). He assigned something to that person as opposed to Allah (SWT)"

In surah Az-Zumar, verse 53, Allah (glorified and exalted is He) says,
“Say, ’O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah; indeed, Allah forgives all sins; indeed, it is He who is The Forgiving, The Merciful.’”

"Do not treat your religion as risk and reward, or as good deeds and bad deeds, or as just a transaction of Jannah and Hellfire. Your religion is a personal relationship between you and your Creator who did not give you reason to disobey Him."
