This book gets points for Anidala content, but overall, I actually dislike it more than the first one. T was a more impressive character to me, personally, in the first. The things I liked about him aren’t on display in this book. He withholds info a lot more in this book. V repeatedly threatening T but ultimately allowing him to keep going because he’s “curious” is frustrating, as well. So redundant.

I think what I mean to say is that Thrawn’s intelligence is just more ~annoying~ in this book for whatever reason. It was more impressive and less arrogant in the first book. I think maybe Eli understanding him, and seeing him from Eli’s pov, made his character more enjoyable to read about. Maybe that’s just me though.

I like Thrawn asking if Anakin can communicate through the Force. Asking if it’s telepathic as well as telekinetic. Because, I mean, that’s not too unreasonable of a question. Thrawn said in Rebels that he didn’t know much about the Force, but it was obvious he at least knew enough to know he didn’t know much. I like that this is the background experience he’s had with it.

Okay. Like I said, I really like the description of the Force being like double vision. It’s a good explanation. But the constant repetition of “double vision” is killing me. Just tell us what he did. We know he’s using the Force to do it. The explanation at the beginning was excellent, but now we just need the results, imo.

The A plot being Anakin and Thrawn working together during the Clone Wars while the B plot is Vader and Thrawn working together 18/20 years later (on the same planet) is pretty cool. I like the parallels. But at the same time, it’s kind of hard to keep the stories straight. They’re kind of melding into each other. But that’s on me, for the most part.

I really like Anakin’s characterization here.

The description of the double-vision from seeing a few moments into the future via the Force is so fascinating. That’s why the Force gives them such quick reflexes, they’re literally seeing snapshots into the future. And they’re able to change it, manipulate it. I wish we got explanations like this in the movies and shows.

It’s interesting how one of Thrawn’s abilities is accurately reading people’s facial expressions almost to the point of being able to read their minds, and yet he cannot do that with Vader since Vader’s face is just a mask. He doesn’t even have body language. Hardly has tonal differences in his voice. It makes for an interesting dynamic between the two of them.

I mean, it would be so easy for these books to make it *silly* that Thrawn was taken out of the equation by Ezra. But no. Because space!whales. Nobody is ever going to predict and account for space!whales. It makes Thrawn more incredible while making his defeat still impressive.
