It is so unfortunate and I mean so unfortunate that this book came out after the movie heart eyes. Not only am I finding myself comparing it to a scarier and more romantic slasher, she has named her killer heart eyes in this which will invite comparison. Comparison this book cannot compete with!!

Also to my bookclub I don’t hate this I just love slashers and am insane about them if they are meta. I’m having fun ngl

So far we have the name Jamie Prescott (after scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis), the red room (twin peaks), the bar is called craven (Wes craven) and the slasher rules are the same as they were in Scream and as established by Men Women and Chainsaws. Rules that have been fucked with since - mostly recently by Stephen Graham Jones. I want HER slant on the slasher not an iteration of what has worked before!!

I think a meta slasher is really hard to pull off. You have to know more than scream, your touchstones gave to extend past the 90s. I’m wondering as I start this what the point of making this referential is? Banking on nostalgia is not inherently interesting if you don’t do anything with it!
