I understand the importance of this book as one of the first "hardboiled" crime novels but it's just so on the nose that it reads like a satire of a hardboiled crime novel!!!

As I was preparing my update to say "it's important for the reading experience to imagine that all of these characters are speaking with the trans-Atlantic accent," I came across the line: "His eyes burned yellowly." What does that even mean, Dashiell?

I know Sam Spade is supposed to be this hardboiled detective but him giving the guy his gun back and being surprised that the guy once again points it at him with the intent to shoot is giving Dr. Doofenshmirtz versus Perry the Platypus
