He was drunk driving and is now in trouble. How refreshing! In most American books, people go out for a drink and then drive home, and I’m expected to be okay with that (my eye twitches every time).

It doesn't help that in the US ,a person's first DUI is only a slap on the wrist and their license isn't revoked. So many people end up with two or three DUIs and then eventually kill someone. It's terrible.
