I’m considering giving up , but I’m kind of curious about how she’s stitched these eight books together. I enjoy linked short stories so I wonder if this is a precursor to them. But it’s long and slow reading because of the language.

Pia G. I started this recently but ended up pausing because it felt quite demanding. Does the rhythm settle as you go further in? How are you liking it so far?

I've finished it now and enjoyed it! I don't know that the rhythm settled as much as I may have settled into it. I allowed myself to skim pages about details I didn't care about (like the politics of the day), but the descriptions of mood and conversation and relationships are absolutely worth it, and I'd started to care about the characters (and their soap opera lives).

I'll review it eventually. But I did try a few other times and set it aside, so don't force yourself.

Pia G. That’s really reassuring, thank you Patty. Maybe I just need to let myself drift with it a little more instead of trying to hold onto every detail.

Yes - and you could even break it up into the eight books if you wanted. They were originally published separately anyway.
