I acquired the paper edition when I was fifteen. Then, I was unimpressed with the writing and did not finish this book. Now, I have begun the hardback edition and I don’t find the style of writing objectionable.

I thought Ubu would’ve been invincible against anyone with two arms. I suppose fighting isn’t primarily about strength.

A teenager bargaining for high stakes with a geriatric. Here, age really is just a number. Eleven-year-old Beautiful Maria is a fully grown woman, strolling around with a youth in his mid-teens. She and Ubu aren’t children. Their childhoods passed quickly. I like how clear Beautiful Maria is very about what she wants. She and Ubu may be young, but they’re not naive. They’ve grown up quickly, like animals.

Jesus Rice. Chinese whispers illustrated. Pun probably intended. I guess I just was ready for this book at fifteen. I find the writing quite beautiful now.

It’s WAY better this time around. I was too young to appreciate it at fifteen. For me, it has an eighties feel. Ubu and Beautiful Maria are so young. When I first read this, her name bugged me. I forgot how tall she was.

Damn, there were a handful of typos on p.9. Who proofread the manuscript? Sure as hell wasn’t me. I’d have caught those. I think the first time I tried to read this book was too soon. I honestly thought the writing style was sort of crap then. Now, it’s beautiful, even though Williams tends to combine words in ways that grate because it’s not U.K. English.
