ligaya’s whole segment is so personal to me… i know what it’s like to live in anger and chai captured that concept of an angry daughter so beautifully :^)

Rereading this and I completely forgot that a huge chunk of the book involved the narration of WWII... Chai's in-depth storytelling of how it felt to live through the war and overhearing [now] historical events that happened in real time through mere conversations or radios is excellent. You feel that immersion of doubt, fear, hatred, and even empathy that comes from Emma and Alfonso when talking about the Japanese.
