Rereading this and I completely forgot that a huge chunk of the book involved the narration of WWII... Chai's in-depth storytelling of how it felt to live through the war and overhearing [now] historical events that happened in real time through mere conversations or radios is excellent. You feel that immersion of doubt, fear, hatred, and even empathy that comes from Emma and Alfonso when talking about the Japanese.
