This book is unbelievably bad. I now have more respect for George R R Martin. It's obviously better for a writer to spend 15+ years not writing his next book if the alternative is spending that time on this bloated, incoherent mess.

Having survived the first chapter, I'm changing my tune - this is fantastic. I can only stomach a few pages a day, but Gass is winning me over.

Hot take. Also, why continue reading it at this point if you dislike it some much?

I'm reading it for a book club. Determined to finish as I often find it occasionally well-written, and I want to put in a good effort to criticise the book by reading all of it. (Also importing the book cost me about $70)
