ok but here’s another thing he got wrong: undertakers during the civil war: yes, government hired, but did not prepare the body (at least not in an embalming way). Embalmers: did prepare the body, and were also privately paid (so if you wanted a body to come home, it’d cost ya)

i mean all this is making me want to do is figure out a roadtrip where i can see all these landmarks in person from the comfort of my 21st century transportation

i’m enjoying his writing and it is very good narratively, but not only is Brown not a historian but i think he is something of an ideologue, too
