I think it’s interesting to see that while the people have discovered their sexuality through external factors, they are still reluctant to pursue intimacy and commitment from others. There’s the underlying insecurity of being rejected and abandoned, which is often the case being part of the gay community.

I really like how different Kim’s POV was compared to the rest. Her sexuality didn’t come as a transformative surprise and she didn’t necessarily went through trauma just to learn about herself. It provides a clear example that queer experiences vary from person to person. Everyone is valid.

Now, I’m confused. Rape is not sugarcoated for what happened to Jim. I suppose this is really accounted by the people instead of the author. Things were definitely different during Ray’s time where in his mind, he considered sexual encounters with adults as consensual and normal. I just feel for these people, they went through so much in life before finding their calling.

I’m going to give this book the benefit of the doubt in wording Ray’s childhood past with no accountability against the grown adults who took advantaged of him, this might be an account of the real people in this book. But if not, I’m sideyeing the author for not calling what happened for what it is.

I like that there’s multiple queer POV’s and I like the format of descriptively getting to know them. Right now, with Craig, he has explored his sexuality at a young age and as a result, has experienced homophobia and discrimination that alienated and shamed his peers. It’s an interesting start, it paints such a vivid past of a gay person who was able to identify himself from reacting to his environment.
