You know, sometimes you just kind of know you’re reading something *special*. This is the first time I’ve experienced that with epic fantasy in 2 years. It is doing everything exactly right so far.

I love that this book basically has 2 climaxes and associated resolutions associated with its 2 major settings here in the last act. Huge battle sequence halfway through, but wait there’s still a lot more left to tackle. And it is. Very well.

Can’t fuckin wait for book 2. Next month. I’ll get to it in a couple of weeks hopefully 🔥

Most other books would have ended right about here! However, there is still a loose end or two awaiting a bit of coverage, which I am really looking forward to. Certainly the fact that Ward is not rushing the resolution phase here where most other authors tend to is something I’m very glad about.

This book is too damn good, man. I had a thought while reading today that this book separates itself from other epic fantasy I’ve read in that every major character feels like a *main* character when they’re the POV. And that doesn’t disappear when they aren’t the POV. Not only are their motivations, etc. all incredibly well handled, but they are *actually* the main characters of their own stories, truly so.

Not much to add for my short reading today. Just continuing the build-up of the final act with some of the interesting political ramifications that have been so long built up

Finished this “combat climax”, and it makes sense how there’s an entire third of the book left now. So much political stuff going on the first half of the book that now the context of *everything* is different and must now be tackled. Looking forward to seeing what all that does, as the politics of the book have been incredible thus far already.

Crazy to start/do what feels like the climactic battle sequence halfway through the book lol

(Haven’t finished said sequence yet, but I’m still very curious what the rest of this book entails)

At this point I’vs basically said all that I can about my enjoyment without straight up discussing the plot and story reveals and whatnot. Absolutely enraptured, now halfway through. Unsure how I’m only halfway through, but I’m sure Ward will pay off everything to come.

I shall hit the halfway point tomorrow. The politics and many complications arising from so fricking many different motivations and whatnot is really so much fun. It’s nice when the conflict isn’t used merely because the plot demands but rather because it always feels true to the individual group or character.

The plot very heavily thickens in all the various POVs and settings. Still so much loving this experience. Not often a fantasy is this hard to put down despite the methodical pace of it.

Loving the dynamic of character motivations that are conflicting and aligning and subverting across various different settings, even in ways that some characters do not recognize while others are actively trying to bring it about. Also a few interesting developments and hinted at “revelations” (not yet explicitly revealed) that clearly will have ramifications on future plot development. Certified banger thus far.
