blimey, reading this before the internet (with which one could look up words and cultural references) would have been a bit of a bother.

An intelligent demonstration of the reactionary element that can occur in misanthropy (an intellectual/aesthetic tendency that I am sympathetic to) as well as an inquiry into the limits of both constructed narratives and relativism. The protahonist is both repellent and intelligent (the latter exacerbating the former). Great book even if I am slow at reading it.
