An intelligent demonstration of the reactionary element that can occur in misanthropy (an intellectual/aesthetic tendency that I am sympathetic to) as well as an inquiry into the limits of both constructed narratives and relativism. The protahonist is both repellent and intelligent (the latter exacerbating the former). Great book even if I am slow at reading it.

It's a real issue how misanthropy and pessimistic philosophy (I sympathize with it too) can veer into a sort of fascistic disregard for the suffering... the radical socialist and the hopeless pessimistic in me are usually at odds lol

yeah, and reactionary art can be good - if lacking in analysis of where the malaise of modernity originates. Pessimism does tend to not necessarily be "useful" to either political camp by its very nature and I do think that misanthropy past a certain level can be a little self-defeating (if one is human and suffers the same folly, then what right has one to judge harshly?). I am not much of a political activist by any means haha. The most political action I have done is some political canvassing outside a polling booth I was transported to as a child (which I remember fondly) and charity donations. But yeah, I have sympathy for not having much faith in one's political program working out.
I always want to read this but it feels like I’d have to put my entire life on hold for a year to do it lol, godspeed
