There's an early chapter where the ancient wizard is teaching the young, brash noble about the history of the empire. It's a long and boring recitation of past rulers from a lecturer who is far too enthusiastic about such a boring topic. I can't help but draw a comparison to those who have repeatedly assured me with fervor that this series is excellent. Rather, it's actually overwritten and rife with repetition IMHO.

I feel like every time we meet the POV characters in their respective chapters, we get reintroduced to them. We have to experience Glokta's sarcastic inner monologue to be shown he's a bastard. Same with Jezal. Logen is a "barbarian" agog at "civilization." Etc. Let's get on with the story! These chapters could all be shorter and advance the story at a more enthralling pace. But we get dragged along... oof.
