I tend to agree with Doctor Varvinsky's reasoning as to why Dimitri would look straight ahead at the judges. Herzensteube's point about looking at the ladies was silly. If you're being charged with murder—especially with Dimitri being that "new man" that he spoke Alyosha about, that's not ridden with lust—you're really only going to care about what matters in that courtroom
