Even the publishers themselves couldn’t be bothered to read the books they published and instead reached for classics.

The schoolmaster had a theory about the depthlessness of contemporary literature, though it wasn’t one he liked to share publicly for fear of repercussions in the university. However, he loved to repeat it to us, clapping his soft white hands together and declaiming until his face flushed red. His theory was that novels now must move as smoothly as possible; there could be no friction. Names, places, culture and history must be removed in the name of soft edges, in order to speed the reader along. The goal was for these books to be sold in as many cities as possible in as many languages as possible. They had to appeal to people in places that we’d never been to and had never heard of in order to make as much money as possible. Consequently, everything that made our world distinct had to be subtracted, wiped clean. What remained was a shadow, a city without substance. Rendered like this, the stories told acquired a lazy universality.
