I'm on page 100 of 272. Saira blends fact and her initially fantastical notions of her homeland in a spare way that initially jolted me, but now serves as I'm finding myself utterly addicted to her style. Highly original in point of view, I recommend this book to anyone straddling cultural worlds, and especially to those of us heading to Afghanistan for the first time. It's a book that opens souls and prepares minds.

She blends fact, fantasy, and how her expectations of both in her familial homeland in exquisite, mind-bending detail. Though her language is spare at times, due to both her subject matter and perceptions this seems entirely appropriate, making her approach the mind's tricks -- and the deep and mundane truths within her search -- entirely real by the no-nonsense way in which she relates the utterly fantastical.
