All the homophobes were running for their lives, in case queerness was contagious. I’d never understood straight men who were concerned about gay men lusting after them.
*Yeah, Chad, I find your questionable grooming methods, ill-fitting clothes, and ass acne irresistible. I’ll try my best to keep my hands to myself, but it’ll be a challenge.*

“You want the milk, you buy the cow,” he said primly.
“That’s fucking bullshit, and you know it! I just need one carton of milk!” I whined. “Or…a gallon or two.”
Did I really need to work on myself? I was fine.

Did he take care of himself? Work out? He was forty. His bone density was probably trash.

Like all humans, I’d been born against my will, into a family not of my choosing, to the burden of a last name I did not know.

I've been trying to figure out what weirds me out about Palmini's acting in this book, and I finally figured it out. It sounds... a lot like... as if William... Shatner... were narrating...

Initial thoughts: Great writing, engaging story, good spice, everyone's a good actor, the expansive cast is a treat. In a lot of ways it feels like Kiss or Hunt the Villain if Rina Kent were much better at the craft of writing. Not sure yet how much it will stand the test of time emotionally, but I'm definitely feeling 4.5* on this one.

“We’ll do it over a game of chess. It helps me think more clearly.”
Ten minutes later, we were in his office, arranging the pieces on a board. We flipped a coin. I got to be white.
Someone didn't watch The Queen's Gambit, apparently. Even I know (now) that that's not how you determine who's white in chess.

You know, Rina Kent MM and especially Kiss the Villain will always hold a special place in my heart, but in some ways this book is reminding me of Kiss the Villain if Rina Kent were actually a skilled writer.
