Instead, the warden shares that his wife Melinda is dying from a terminal brain tumor. Paul forgets to ask to have Brutal transferred to E Block to help manage the incoming violent prisoner.

The mouse shows up again specifically when Percy is off. The inmates on death row notice that the mouse seems to know when Percy is gone. Paul secretly agrees with this observation. Harry shows Toot-Toot how the mouse responds to treats, bringing a brief moment of lighthearted wonder to the block. Paul thinks the mouse has powers.

The mouse comes back days later. All the guards are amused by it except Percy of course. Some of the guards try to feed the mouse and play along with it. Percy hates it and wants to kill it. He goes as far as throwing his baton violently at it.

Paul lives in the green pines nursing home and compares it to cold mountain death row. There is a guy named Brad there that is like Percy. He calls him Paulie despite him telling Brad to stop. Brad makes jokes about Alzheimer’s. Paul passes time writing about when John first arrived in 1932.
