On the first page of the prologue, the young Beothuk pauses to rest, letting the canoe drift with the current. The problem is he is paddling upriver from the coast, made clearly evident in the next paragraphs. Some slight stage management in the first few pages: "tore his eyes away from the flood scene." Not hopeful of the best read.

Samuel Wilkes People loved it here. It's written by a friend's mother. I suspect it's appeal has more to do with it being local but I haven't read it myself. interested to know what you think.


John Hanson My initial concerns did not continue. It is well written. It is colloquial though. Not a page turner. I think you are right in that its appeal is more to it being local. I'm about half-way through. Might not finish till end of summer due to travelling.
