Occasionally, I find Alena annoying, but I don't know. The story, the plot feels so comfy, familiar. It's something I rarely get from English or even Polish novels. Still, there are cultural differences, especially when it comes to gender roles, but Russian fantasy often has politically incorrect content so that's not surprising. Sometimes this feels very refreshing after reading American or British books, though.

Kudos to fantranslators. If not for them, I would never have read this book. I didn't know how much I was missing Russian humorous fantasy. Alena is amoral, sarcastic heroine, who inherited the title Baba Yaga. Many fairy tales referenced and hilarity ensured. I was supposed to read Olga Gromyko!
