19. The Jackdaw's Last Case by Paul Di Filippo - absolutely loved it!!!!!

20. The Biggest by James Patrick Kelly - halfway through i had a feeling that this didn't have a happy ending, so i flipped to the last page and i was right. i really really don't like sad stories so i didn't finish this one. but it was beautifully well written - a good sad story, if you do like them

Bluebeard & the White Buffalo: A Rangergirl Yarn by Tim Pratt - i'm wondering how classy it is to take a real Lakota Sioix sacred story (the white buffalo) and make it into a fun western about white people in which the only Native Americans are evil and die. also not superheroes

The Pentacostal Home for Flying Children by Will Clarke - absolutely delightful!!!!

22. The Zeppelin Pulps by Jess Nevins - it's not superheroes, but it's about comics, at least. slightly interesting

23. Wild Cards: Prologue & Interludes by George R R Martin - just as fascinating as i hoped it'd be! i love authors that can evoke a completely different voice within just a couple sentences

24. Wild Cards: Just Cause by Carrie Vaughn - kind of boring. hard to believe it's one of Wild Cards's best

17. The Death Trap of Dr. Nefario by Benjamin Rosenbaum - good but, and i realize this is a pretty niche complaint, i've read this exact premise (superheros in therapy, specifically Robin) in AT LEAST two dozen tumblr posts so it didn't really blow my mind 😂

18. Man Oh Man - It's Manna Man by George Singleton - deeply wonderful. maybe, like, a LITTLE corny for some people but definitely one of my favorites

15. The Dystopianist, Thinking of His Rival, is Interrupted By a Knock on the Door by Jonathon Lethem - i think i understood this less than i did Burning Sky. i loved the writing and the couple parts i did understand, though

16. Sex Devil by Jack Penedarvis - very cute. a guaranteed good-natured eye roll

5. The Rememberer by J Robert Lennon - i really liked this! also not what i would call a superhero story but it had kind of a superhero-y feel

6. The Nuckelavee: A Hellboy Story by Christopher Golden & Mike Mignola - mildly interesting but extremely not a superhero story (even if Hellboy is usually a superhero?)

story by story update:
1. Ubermensch! by Kim Newman - my notes on this story alone went waaaaaay over the character limit so i'll put it in the comments

2. A Knight of Ghosts & Shadow by Chris Roberson. dnf after about 3 pages. old-timey pulp detective type thing - just not my thing

3. Trickster by Steven Barnes & Tananarive Due. not what i would call a superhero story but interesting!

autumn 21. Phillip José Farmer's Tarzan Alive: A Definitive Biography of Lord Greystoke by Win Scott Eckert - the inclusion of this piece in the anthology REALLY tilts the bean can for me. we've already had stories that really stretch the definition of the word "superhero", but here we have a 5 page advertisement for another anthology that literally isn't even SLIGHTLY about superheroes. it's an essay extolling the virtues of another author and his oh so fascinating books and stories (an essay which was originally the preface to one of these books, which is exactly how it reads - a preface to a book you're not reading). what's even more obnoxious is that under other circumstances, they WOULD sound really interesting (a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen-esque massive crossover of dozens of pop culture figures and how they're all actually related to Tarzan, but more scholarly), but because it's been brought up in this context it's just galling! (not to mention that all 5 pages are neatly summed up in the 3 sentence introduction written by the editor - making the actual essay seem redundant to me!) in an anthology like Nerdtastic, it would have been perfectly appropriate, but here the choice to include it is insufferable. people should really let authors/editors know that not every book has to be 500 pages! if you only have enough material for 300, 200 even, that's okay! it's not a page length competition! a quality/relevance vs quantity assessment would have REALLY done this book a service

TLDR: a 5 page ad for another anthology that literally isn't even about superheroes
