Although the action scene is very clumsily written, shockingly passive and boring, I really like that Ava isn't suddenly granted magical powers. I like how she knows how useless she is and uses that to her advantage. And I like that she gets hurt - she doesn't suddenly come into some magical power or all her training leads to her 'magically' being a good fighter. So all in all, a good sequence.

Sometimes I'm not sure if it's fair to criticise new, inexperienced authors on the use of passive voice and telling, not showing. After all, they're just telling a story, right? What right do I have to demand they play by some arbitrary rules someone figured out makes a 'better' narrative? It's as bad as the person who decided Mary Sues need to die in a fire despite them featuring in the most popular YA books.

I still quite like Ava's bravery. She's incredibly well-adjusted for an eighteen year old.

I like Ava. She's quirky and proactive. Yay!
