Wild that I've read something like 50 cumulative pages, but only advanced 7 pages from where I left off. This is a three-bookmark book, and I'm on pages 174, 192, and 260 all at once.

Note to lines 939-940: "If I correctly understand the sense of this succinct observation, our poet suggests here that human life is but a series of footnotes to a vast obscure unfinished masterpiece."
Nabokov, you cheeky rascal.

This book is a lot of immersive fun. Like House of Leaves and other texts that play with footnotes, it's difficult to track my actual progress since it's nonlinear. But I feel like a detective, ferreting out clues and following leads. Wheee, the game is afoot!

Doing it for the scratch-off gold! You gotta make your own fun - but I wonder... would I be as excited to start a new book without a scratchy-scratchy Pavlovian reward to it?

I like that it makes you choose how you want to read it. I read the poem straight through, then read the notes linearly, occasionally referencing back to the lines which they annotated, often to great absurd effect.

Lots of back and forth."
I took the narrator's recommendation to read all the commentary first, jumping back and forth between related notes as his directs. His unreliable and possibly insane nature's pretty obvious this way. It's a hoot but does get creepy at times.

Well they're just plain old post-its. My 2 y/o daughter has a habit of pulling out my page markers and the little grip of post-it glue at least slows her down a bit.
