The chapter on class talked about separating the working class along racial lines, and politicians pitting “white working class” against their poor black neighbours. An exercise to distract from the struggle against the haves akin to the “divide and conquer” method used by colonialists.

The chapter on Feminism came unexpected as I believed the book to be purely on race. I have ignore/rejected feminism so far as it didn’t speak to me as a genderqueer person but after this chapter I understand it better. The key point relating it to race was that feminism isn’t representative and that racism is often upheld in what the author coins “white feminism”.

Repeatedly telling ourselves, and worse still telling our children, that we are all equal is a misdirected yet well-intentioned lie. Indulging in the myth that we are all equal denies the economic, political and social legacy of a British society that has historically been organised by race. The reality is, in material terms, we are nowhere near equal.
