You can tell that this was one of Austen's earlier works, and still a rough draft -- the reader is dropped into the story with very little introduction/explanation of the characters, their background and situation. Surprisingly, the characterization of the main character Emma and her sister Elizabeth is flat and undistinguished at the beginning.

And of course, there is the requisite misunderstanding cropping up between Emma and Mr. Howard... I do hope we get to see Elizabeth and Mr. Shaw's relationship develop. I like their dynamic!
