You can tell that this was one of Austen's earlier works, and still a rough draft -- the reader is dropped into the story with very little introduction/explanation of the characters, their background and situation. Surprisingly, the characterization of the main character Emma and her sister Elizabeth is flat and undistinguished at the beginning.
