Alok starts by establishing themselves as being born into non-binary, and as someone who visibly expresses this. Unfortunately, to the average reader, it’s seems to be a scolding on how to respect them, rather than opening up with a discourse on gender and how we should all question it.

Alok establishes themselves as a gender non-confirming being, like an identity that just is. It’s a very American approach in my view. Almost aggressively trying to demand a slice of a pie of accepted, protected identities that make up melting pot America.
